Screen films are a rather new phenomenon in the Pantheon of Fine Arts. They prove to be the youngest art “invention” along with photography andtelevision. Its two other wide-known denominations are “motion pictures” or “cinema”;

In 1895 Auguste and Louis Lumiere invented the Cinematograph that included camera, projector and printer. Within months they became the main European cinema producers, earning millions within the nearest time.

The 1940s-60s

The 1940s are almost completely dedicated to the war. It was partly explained by the necessity for anti-Nazi propaganda. The brightest examples of them are "Went the day well?" (1942), "The way ahead" (1944). The most successful screen film must have been "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

In the USA, the screen films throughout the 1940s were propagandist, including "Forever and a Day", "Watch on the Rhine" (1943), "Shadow of a doubt" (1943). This period made Humphrey Boggart a real screen film star in the US.

The soldiers that came back from war inspired creation of a lot of films as well, including "The best years of our lives" and "The big red one".

Still, in Britain, for example, wartime stirred interest in unreal objects. Some of them were "Here comes Mr. Jordan", "Heaven can wait", "Blithe Spirit".

The 1950 are the beginning of the Cold War period. The zeitgeist of new Ideology gets into every sphere of life.

Still, it was exactly during this time that most of world-known screen film festivals were established, including the Cannes Film Festival.

During this epoch, most of theaters start to die, but it serves to be a perfect opportunity for cinema theaters. They become larger and more technically equipped, attracting more and more visitors. The technology of shooting screen films grows to be more complicated and interesting for watchers.

Screen film directors question social and political issues in their flicks, staging "Blackboard Jungle", "On the Waterfront", "12 angry men", etc.

The epoch brings the rise of Indian and Japanese global cinema that flourish by the 1960s.

During the 1960s, the screen films in the US, foe example, decline as the interest to the cinema falls and there is not so much success accompanying it.

American films are not the only films on the Earth, and it becomes understandable in the mid-60s.
